A way forward
Towards a 21st Century Mental Health System
From the salt mines aka medium circa 2020.
We need to have an honest conversation about mental health in this country. It is terrifying to imagine the vulnerability that will take. Mental illness is not cancer, but it is. It has the potential to lurk in the dark of all of our lives, in our families, cropping up when we least expect it and doing lasting damage.
It is scary. But the truth is, we know how to treat it. If treatment happens quickly the damage is less severe, in fact not so severe at all. This is a system that is a part of the mainstream of healthcare in our society, but also apart from it. There is already lots of overlap, but very little coordination.
Change will necessitate changing laws, changing payment systems, changing the way the mental health industry does business, but most importantly changing hearts and minds.
