I dropped our rising high schooler off at Type 1 United's Camp Leo in Black Diamond, WA today and had all the feels. I was so impressed by the care that the program and medical staff took right away to make us comfortable. Turning off the parent access to her glucose monitor made me nervous, until I saw how seriously the nurse took understanding the specifics of my daughter's diabetes.
It's her third summer there and she's already talking about being a counselor. Having peers who just GET IT without having to explain has been so wonderful for her confidence.
It did this salty old camp counselor's heart a lot of good to see them readying the cabins and campfire for the week while excitedly meeting lifelong friends for the first time.
Have a great summer everyone, especially those of you with special needs kids. It's wonderful when we find those magical places that we can trust to care for our (not so) little ones.
And remember to par-tay when they're gone!

When the younger one can go off to camp at the same time...then it's time for GROWNUP CAMP!!
